From 23.1.2023 – 24.1.2023 we held the first transnational event as part of the UNITED project, with the aim of commemorating the International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
In cooperation with the Jewish Municipality of Osijek, we organized a walk along the “Jewish Osijek” educational memorial route, under the guidance of history professor Tomislav Vuković. The route highlights the contribution of the Jewish people in the development of Osijek as we know it today and shows that some of the iconic landmarks for which Osijek is known are Jewish heritage.
The next day, we organized a visit to the Museum of Personal Stories, where we heard (and saw) the stories of members of the Jewish and Roma minorities. After that, we attended the award ceremony of the Righteous Among the Nations medal to the deceased Kamilo Firinger. Kamilo Firinger was a lawyer from Osijek who saved the members of the Jewish Fischer family, the mother Margita and two children, Lelja and Darko, by smuggling them across the border into Hungary with the documents of his own children. The ceremony was also attended by Darko Fischer (now 84), who nominated Firinger for this award.
The project UNITED is implemented by the Nansen Dialogue Centre (Croatia) in partnership with the Technical school and Natural Sciences School Ruđer Bošković Osijek (Croatia), Glocal Factory (Italy), IIS “Ferraris Fermi” (Italy), Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor (Slovenia) and WCIES (Poland) and is funded by the European Union through the CERV program.
